The GLE starts off with a major disadvantage compared to the Cayenne, a lackluster 4-cylinder base engine. For this comparison, we’ve had to look a little further up the range to the GLE 450, which adds an inline six-cylinder engine. Power numbers are much more similar this way and straight-line acceleration actually favors the Mercedes-Benz, although a lower curb weight and a standard adaptive suspension help the Cayenne outperform the GLE 450 when cornering.

Comparing the interiors of both vehicles, there are some noticeable benefits of driving a Cayenne instead of a GLE 450. The genuine leather seating surfaces of the Cayenne offer greater comfort and refinement than the synthetic MB-Tex Leatherette used inside the Mercedes-Benz. You’ll also find a greater number of speakers inside the Cayenne for a superior listening experience. Not only that, but an optional passenger touchscreen in the Cayenne lets you easily delegate the job of picking the music to your front seat passenger – something the Mercedes can’t match in any trim.

Another great reason to choose Porsche over Mercedes-Benz is the fact that you’ll enjoy a complimentary scheduled maintenance visit within the first 12 months or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first. This further enhances the already superior ownership experience that comes from choosing Porsche instead of Mercedes-Benz.

At the top of the GLE model hierarchy is the GLE 580, which is largely the same as the 450, but is powered by a 4.0-liter V8. Porsche recently brought back the V8 option for the Cayenne, making it available in the Cayenne S. At first glance, it might seem like the GLE has a real power advantage, but the Cayenne is about 500 pounds lighter. In addition, the Porsche V8 is tuned to have a wider torque band, rather than the higher peak numbers you see in the chart for the Mercedes. The result is that the 0-60 times are nearly identical despite the difference in peak output. This kind of consistent power delivery is much more important than peak horsepower for larger vehicles like these, and in real-world conditions the Cayenne will feel more nimble and be able to react faster to quick heel-toe inputs.

We touched on equipment a bit before, but we thought we’d take this opportunity to highlight some important differences that carry over to these higher-end trims. Both of these vehicles come with standard 20-inch wheels, but if you’re looking to stand out a bit with a more interesting design, Porsche’s wheel design options give you five times the number of choices you’d have with the Mercedes. Then there’s paint. The GLE is available with an above-average number of choices. Porsche offers more, but the real strength of Porsche customization is the Paint to Sample option, which allows you to choose an entirely bespoke shade for the exterior. There are options for the color of the badges too, and customizable decals. You can even choose from a range of colors for the exhaust tips, and three different configurations of Matrix Design LED headlights, something the GLE doesn’t offer at all. Inside, the customization options continue, and although Mercedes-Benz does put some real effort into offering a wide range of options, it falls well short of ways in which you can make a Cayenne your own.

For those who want the absolute most in performance, Mercedes-Benz turns the GLE over to their AMG division to wring even more power out of that 4-liter V8. Unfortunately, for all their efforts, AMG doesn’t come close to the power available from the Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid, where the highly-tuned V8 is paired with an additional 174 horsepower from the electric motor to out-accelerate the AMG GLE 63 S by nearly a quarter of a second from 0 to 60.
